The Marescialla perfume of the Pharmaceutical Perfume Workshop of Santa Maria Novella is a bouquet of spicy oriental woody notes. The exclusive formulation is of nineteenth-century origin with the spicy top note of the macis that accompanies the dry and aromatic woody notes of the heart and bottom. The original formula of the fragrance, born as a scented “poudre” (powder), was created by a noble French, Countess D’Aumont, wife of a Marshal of France, who used this fragrance to perfume her gloves. It is said that, because of her interest in alchemy, she was suspected of witchcraft and burned at the stake. The “bouquet à la Maréchale” was all the more fashionable in the late 1800s, so much so that Tomasi di Lampedusa, makes his protagonist Angelica wear it to the great ball from the Salina in his literary masterpiece Il Gattopardo…” from angelica’s neckline rose the scent of bouquet à la Maréchale….”
